1 Cor 12:31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.
Paul is writing to the church of Corinth concerning the gifts we received in the name of our Lord and saviour Jesus the Christ. But Paul end his reasoning concerning the gifts with a request to strive for the greater gifts as he continued his argument with the added love as a more excellent way.
Now when I came to know the Lord, it was a desire for true love that compelled to learn more concerning the Word of God for in it, I believed was hidden the meaning of true love. Now Paul new about the meaning for when he ends in chapter 13, he explained that what remains is faith, hope and love and love being the greatest.
In vers 10 Paul give the clue to understand the meaning of a more excellent way. He suggests that whenever the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. Like wise in Ephesians 4 Paul explain the purpose of the gifts was for us to reach the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to a measure of the maturity of the fullness of Christ,
If then we become mature according to Paul we now longer think like a child, Paul continues to say that now we know in part, but then we will know completely, just as we have also been completely known. The known part is crucial, based on God and His love for us even though we did not know Him.
So I belief that the maturity is to come to the knowledge of God’s love for us, as Paul prayed in Ephesians 3:14-19 On account of this, I bend my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that he may grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith (you having been firmly rooted and established in love), 18 in order that you may be strong enough to grasp together with all the saints what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, in order that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
Peter explained the road to achieving a more excellent way in 2 Peter 1:5-7 Because of this, make every effort to add integrity to your faith; and to integrity add knowledge; to knowledge add self-control; to self-control add endurance; to endurance add godliness; to godliness add Christian affection; and to Christian affection add love.
I believe if the love comes to maturity, as explained we no longer live on account of hope or faith but on account of God’s love. A love that we can trust, trusting that God’s love is enough for us to know that God will keep nothing from us, not on account of hope or faith but love based on what God already gave us, as Paul explained in Romans 8:31-32 What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things?
Praise God for His love expressed through His Son who gave Himself as a gift of love, this is reaching maturity for in comparison to the mentioned all the other gifts is pale.
I heard a testimony of a 11 year old girl in a refugee camp who speak without any fear for she said that Jesus said He will always be with us and never forsake us. Her faith is based on God’s love for her.
